an agentic trading app did hundreds of millions in volume in its first couple of weeks. today Sequoia led its $30M seed. frontrun flagged Catalyst 230 days ago.

tl;dr: Catalyst builds AI trading agents for everyday investors: you state an intent in plain language, and its agents turn it into a trading strategy and execute it, with a human approving. the company says its pilot, aimed at power traders, generated hundreds of millions in trading volume over a couple of weeks. the $30M seed led by Sequoia was announced october 8 2026, with Jump Trading, PeakXV, Lux Capital, AntiFund, Coinbase and Premji Invest in the round (Fortune). frontrun flagged Catalyst on february 20 2026, 230 days before the round.

what is catalyst?

Catalyst is a startup building AI trading agents for retail investors. Its agents turn a plain-language intent into a trading strategy and then execute it, with a human in the loop who has to accept.

in Iskandar's words to Fortune, the idea "is that people will simply state an intent, and we have our agents to figure out everything end to end." its site lists the venues its agents can pull from and trade on: news, prediction markets, yield, stocks, commodities, tokens and private markets.

who founded catalyst?

Catalyst was cofounded in 2025 by Justin Zheng, 25, and Dylan Iskandar, 21, according to Fortune.

they met as teenagers at a poker game in 2019, at a conference run by economist Tyler Cowen. Zheng is pretty sure Iskandar took his money. "We just stayed in touch, and we got closer over the years before deciding to start something together," Zheng told Fortune.

  • Justin Zheng (@jzlegion) got into Ethereum in middle school, built a Village Global-backed biometrics startup by high school, and joined Sam Altman's Worldcoin in 2019.
  • Dylan Iskandar (@iskdyl) published papers for the U.S. Department of Defense in high school.

how much did catalyst raise, and who invested?

Catalyst raised a $30 million seed round led by Sequoia, announced October 8 2026. Jump Trading, PeakXV, Lux Capital, AntiFund, Coinbase and Premji Invest also invested, per Fortune.

George Robson, a partner at Sequoia, described Catalyst's agents as "a suit of armor as you navigate the financial world."

after that pilot, people are now being let off the waitlist.

on the obvious worry, Zheng was direct: "We're not here to build a casino. We're not here to build a gambling app."

and Iskandar's version of the mission: "We want to build safe, trustworthy finance. A farmer shouldn't need a hedge fund to be able to hedge."
